Diving Deep with Omega’s Newest Watch

March 21, 2022

If you’re an avid diver and a diving watch is an important element of your diving gear, you might want to give thought to purchasing the only watch in the world that can survive a descent of 35,876 feet or about 6.8 miles beneath the sea.

Omega has been making divers’ watches since the 1930s, but the company knew to create a timepiece sturdy enough to survive the demands of The Five Deeps Expedition into the deepest part of the ocean – the Mariana Trench – would require an innovative approach and a team effort. Omega was up to the challenge.

A Marriage of Performance and Style

The Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional is packed with full ocean depth technology yet is surprisingly slim and light at less than 28 millimeters. The expedition logo is in the middle of the caseback inside concentric circles paying homage to the multi-beam sonar technology employed by The Five Deeps Expedition team to map the ocean floor. Relevant information about the piece including the model, reference number, DNV-GL certification, maximum tested 15,000-meter depth and materials are all laser-engraved.

The new Ultra Deep collection, with water resistance up to about 20,000 feet, meets the ISO 6425 certification for saturated diving, with a case design claiming four newly pending patents regarding the crystal, crystal gasket, crown and a two-piece caseback. The watch is made either of brushed titanium or a new alloy called O-MEGASTEEL, a high-performance stainless steel alloy Omega says has superior strength, a whiter color and exceptional resistance to corrosion.

A Unisex Beauty

The movement is the co-axial master chronometer, automatic caliber 8912 with a 60-hour power reserve. It’s fully finished and decorated, but as a diver’s watch the caseback is closed, so you can’t see it. Not only is the watch technologically advanced, but it is also beautiful and befitting of both male and female wearers.

The price for the Ultra Deep starts at US$11,200 for steel versions with a rubber strap, US$11,600 for the steel with bracelet, and US$12,300 for the titanium model on a NATO strap.
