Expect the Unexpected in Miami in January

October 20, 2022

The winter months are some of the best to head to the electrified city of Miami. There are many things going on that are sure to grab your attention.

Miami is replete with pockets of exclusive and uncommon neighborhoods that should really be explored. These districts have their own, individual identities, many of which are must-sees. The shopping and dining scenes are extraordinary, not to mention the exhilarating nightlife.

The festive season in December – although delightful to spend with loved ones – may be rather stressful, so getting away from it all for a while may be just what you need to recharge your batteries and Miami in January, might be the perfect answer. So, if you are planning on taking in the Art Basel exhibit in December, you just might want to extend your stay, because January’s agenda is hopping in Miami.

Have a look at some of the things to see and do in “The Magic City” this January:

Art Deco Weekend

This much-awaited event takes place this coming January 13-15. Art Deco Weekend is a cultural festival celebrating Miami’s architecture, history and arts. This will be the 46th year the Miami Design and Preservation League has orchestrated the event at Lummus Park, between 5th and 15th streets along Ocean Drive. The event brings attention to the gorgeous Art Deco architecture along Ocean Drive and throughout Miami Beach and is tagged the largest educational outreach program of the year and a major initiative to promote historic preservation in Miami. More than 150,000 people will enjoy 85 unique events including lectures, architectural tours, films, dog walks, classic car shows, musical entertainment and more.

The Miami/Coral Gables Art & Mega Festival of the Arts

The 9th Annual Miami/Coral Gables Art & Mega Festival of the Arts takes place this January 28-29. And a mega festival is right! There are six festivals happening simultaneously featuring fine art, a kids’ fest, kids’ talent competition, wearable fashion/art fest, dog and pet fest and the beer, wine and spirits fest. This is a wonderful event in which to participate if you have your children or grandchildren with you.

Children will have a wonderful time expressing their creative sides at the Miami/Coral Gables Art & Mega Festival of the Arts.

The Vintage Motorcycle Show

The 16th Annual Dania Beach Vintage Motorcycle Show on January 28, is the largest vintage show of its kind in south beach. There will be cycle vendors, live music, a bike parts swap meet, food, exhibits, motorcycle field games, the Roller Derby Girls, jaw-dropping vintage bicycle displays, and more. Judges will also determine the top models out of more than 250 vintage bikes. The event will take place from 5-10 p.m. at Frost Park, 300 NE 2nd Street, Dania Beach.

If you have a passion for vintage cycles, you will want to attend the Vintage Motorcycle Show this January.

The Great Gatsby Party

Get out your best black tie and flapper-inspired threads, get glammed up, and step back in time to the roaring 20s era for an unforgettable evening. Miami is one of four cities hosting this extravagant event. For two back-to-back nights – January 13-14 – the party will feature craft cocktails; fancy bites like caviar and petit fours; entertainment from aerialists, acrobats, dancers, and musical performances; speakeasy suites; and more. Time for Some Fine Dining

There are many fine dining restaurants in Miami to enjoy different types of cuisine. Here are some of our choices:

As Baoli says, dining here is embarking on a sensory journey. With entrees like double premium bone-In ribeye, accompanied with a trifecta of truffle, yamaki and yakiniku sauces, to sides like parmesan truffle fries, topped off with desserts like Asuki crème brulee – it’s easy to see why. Executive Chef Gustavo Vertone uses only the freshest and finest ingredients sourced both locally and worldwide. To make it more appealing, Baoli is on Collins Avenue, one of America’s most iconic streets.

This restaurant bears the name of one of its founders, Mario Carbone. Rounding off the trio of owners are Rich Torrisi and Jeff Zalaznick. Carbone has the distinction of being one of the most celebrated Italian restaurants of the past decade.According to the New York Times, Carbone “is a fancy, red-sauce joint as directed by Quentin Tarantino, bringing back the punch-in-the-guts thrills of a genre that everybody else sees as uncultured and a little embarrassing while exposing the sophistication that was always lurking there. The restaurant has a technical prowess that can make you giddy and an instinct for sheer entertainment that makes a lot of other restaurants seem like earnest, unimaginative drones.”

Kiki On The River

Kiki On The River is the brainchild of Opium Group founder Roman Jones, who was also a managing partner of the now defunct Philippe Chow Miami restaurant. Décor that is a tribute to the Greek Islands is decidedly upscale and very “Mykonos comes to Miami.” The ambience is par excellence, and the windswept waterfront kicks up its charm. Kiki On The River is not only known for its excellent culinary choices, but for its famous Friday nights when it really Greeks up!

Kiki On The River is a hot for luxury diners looking for an exquisite Greek meal.

Diners in the mood for Southeast Asian cuisine always head to Komodo. The 300-seat establishment is on three stories with both indoor and outdoor seating. Komodo seems to be one of the restaurants of choice for social media influencers and the occasional celebrity. Executive chef Erich Hentschel’s signature dishes are his famous Peking duck, tuna & toro roll, and lobster dynamite.

The banks of the Miami River is home to Seaspice Brasserie and Lounge. This is the epitome of waterfront dining, and with an unforgettable view of the Miami skyline. Seaspice is in close proximity to Miami’s downtown core and the Brickell Financial District. Here, post-industrial meets fine dining since the stunning Seaspice is housed in what once was a waterfront warehouse. Executive Chef Angel Leon is known for his signature wood-fired casseroles, the freshest sea to table dishes and globally-inspired fare. Worth a mention, too, are Seaspice’s signature-crafted cocktails.

When you’re hankering for fresh seafood, Seaspice is where you’ll find it.
