Fort Lauderdale’s Bevy of Brilliant Beaches

March 23, 2022

From the 1930s to the 1980s, Fort Lauderdale used to be the wild party place for students on Spring break, but that has since changed and now the city (and its beaches) is attracting more families.

The city is an incredible getaway to glistening shorelines and vibrant seaside nearby communities. When you’re in the city to enjoy the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS), be prepared for memorable beaches where you can meet underwater creatures, witness sea turtles nesting and just laze the day away, if you wish.

Here are five top beaches in Fort Lauderdale and area for you to check out for some fun in the sun:

Fort Lauderdale Beach

Fort Lauderdale’s main beach stretches for four miles and is one of the most popular. The shallow waters are as clear as crystal and safe for children; the clean sand is ideal for castle building. In addition, this family-friendly area features a lively variety of quaint cafes, cool entertainment venues and exclusive shops.

Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park – Dania Beach

This beachside park established in 1973 has a virtually untouched coastal ecosystem. Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park was named after brave civil rights activists who stood up to Broward County officials for years to open at least one beach for African Americans. Although not as well-known as some of the best beach spots in Fort Lauderdale, this state park is still worth a visit. Free from the maddening crowds of beach goers, this undeveloped and serene 250-acre barrier island features pristine shores and mangrove-lined waterways.

Hillsboro Beach

This beach was named after the Earl of Hillsborough who received what is now the land of the town during the era when Florida was under British rule. Stretching for about three miles, the charming little beachside town lies between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic. Hillsboro Beach is a quaint community surrounded by unspoiled natural landscapes and remnants from bygone eras. Classic beach activities and various sea turtles await at this serene white sand stretch.

North Ocean Park Beach – Pompano Beach

About half an hour away from the heart of the city is one of the prettiest beaches in Greater Fort Lauderdale, North Ocean Park. This beach has the best views of Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse amid the colorful kites of kite surfers in the background. Boasting warm crystalline waters, fewer crowds, and lovely views, North Ocean Park may be lesser known; but solitary beach lovers prefer it that way. Swimmers, sunbathers, snorkelers, kite surfers, and anglers are particularly fond of this vibrant stretch of paradise.

The beaches of Fort Lauderdale are terrific spots to relax and soak up the sun, but so are luxurious pools which can be found at both Villa Nadine and Villa Athena. Each of these private homes is the epitome of glamor and both have outdoor pools and hot tubs. Either of these gorgeous villas would elevate your stay in the city for FLIBS. As with all LVH homes, guests receive full services and 24/7 support.

Hollywood Beach

Sandwiched between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, this sandy stretch is one of the best beaches near Fort Lauderdale, particularly for those seeking a glamorous Old Florida feel. Hollywood Beach has all the ingredients of a pleasant, bustling escape. The beach also has some of the best things to do in Fort Lauderdale, owing to its oceanfront bars, restaurants, and year-round events. Paying homage to Hollywood’s Golden Age, this beach is also home to a renowned 20s-era boardwalk offering nostalgic fun. Expect old-school concerts and playgrounds for energetic children too.
