Ari Reid at Villa Madison: A Luxury Stay in Hope Ranch, Santa Barbara
HOMES
Most people choose a house based on photographs. Ari Reid chooses one by its floor plan, its light at four in the afternoon and the craftsmanship of its woodwork. So when a woman who assesses luxury homes for a living and is one of the most-followed voices in luxury real estate decides where to stay in Santa Barbara, the decision carries weight.
For three nights this September, Ari visited Villa Madison, one of the most exceptional luxury villa rentals in Santa Barbara, California. The 5-bedroom hillside estate is in the private enclave of Hope Ranch, and LVH arranged every detail, from the welcome ceremony to the final post. What follows is a chronicle of her stay, the home behind it and what an LVH chartered villa adds to a Santa Barbara weekend getaway.

Who Is Ari Reid? A Property Expert's Eye
Ari Reid is a London-born luxury property specialist, founder of Ari Reid Property and former Head of Acquisitions at Oliver Bernard Private. More than half a million people follow her work, and they are largely those who buy and rent luxury homes at this level.
From London Agent To Global Property Influencer
Ari studied Chinese and History of Art at SOAS University of London, then took an interior design course at KLC School of Design. After positions in consulting and investment auditing, a conversation with her father settled it. She was interested in property and the business around it, so why not become an agent? Vogue Philippines, which profiled her in 2025, reports that she called the result "truly my dream job."
She launched her platform in 2021, just as property became prime-time entertainment. Her short films move from Chelsea townhouses to Alpine chalets, each built on a simple discipline to make a point, present the evidence and explain why it matters. Reputable press, such as the Financial Times, The Times, Vogue and Europe's leading lifestyle titles have all covered how she changed the way luxury homes are seen and sold. Today she runs Ari Reid Property from Zurich, a property marketing business that partners with estate agents and developers, alongside private advisory for clients buying or relocating.
Why Her Standard Matters
Ari looks at a home the way a buyer or an agent does. She reads the layout before the styling, notes where light falls, checks finishes up close and weighs the location against the price. A luxury rental that passes that inspection has passed a harder test than any star rating.
The LVH Experience Through Ari's Eyes
At Villa Madison, the house is only half of the stay. The other half is a dedicated LVH team that curates every detail around guests, so the only decision left for them is how to spend their time.
Arrival And The Welcome Ceremony
Every LVH stay opens with a welcome ceremony. Before Ari arrived, the kitchen and bar were stocked to her preferences, and suites were brimming with luxury spa products. Her luggage was unpacked while she took in the view, so her first hour in Hope Ranch was spent on the terrace.
A Dedicated Team On The Ground
Every stay at Villa Madison comes with LVH included services: a dedicated steward, a housekeeping team, a field manager and full access to our luxury concierge services. Day to day, the steward ensures the home moves with quiet precision, housekeeping keeps it immaculate and the field manager orchestrates everything beyond its walls, turning a simple request into a reservation, a private instructor or a vehicle waiting at the door.
"What's amazing about LVH is that they organize activities in the home," Ari says in a reel filmed just before her Saturday morning yoga session, adding she was already feeling "incredibly relaxed and spiritual."
Beyond The Villa: Curated Santa Barbara
LVH's concierge extends the stay well past the gates. Additional services can include a private chef, chauffeurs, spa and esthetics, wellness programs, wardrobe care and curated experiences, with private jets, helicopters and yachts arranged on request.
Ari's Santa Barbara weekend getaway in early September balanced her time at the villa with a few of the region's best restaurants. Every booking was confirmed before she arrived.
Friday: Arrival and Montecito. After check-in, the afternoon consisted of two hour-long massages at the villa. Dinner was 20 minutes away at RH Firehouse Grill, set inside RH Montecito's historic firehouse, where an olive-tree courtyard and a grand fireplace carry the evening.
Saturday: The morning opened with private yoga at the villa. Lunch was at Lulio, the Mediterranean-Californian restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton Bacara. In the late afternoon, Ari went horseback riding along the sand in Carpinteria, then enjoyed dinner at home prepared by a private chef trained in London.

Sunday: Tennis and the harbor. Two hours of private tennis lessons on the villa's own court came first. Lunch was at Gracie, a seafood spot steps from the water on Santa Barbara Harbor, followed by a slow afternoon at the house and a final dinner in the villa.

Guests with more time can add two Santa Barbara classics:
- Vineyards of Santa Barbara wine country, in the Santa Ynez Valley, are within an hour's drive by chauffeur.
- Santa Barbara polo returns each May through August at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club in Carpinteria, founded in 1911, with formal Sunday matches.
Closer to home, Hope Ranch Beach is below the bluffs, while downtown Santa Barbara and the Funk Zone are just a short drive away. LVH's recap of Ari's stay captures those days at the villa.

Indulge in best private onsite tennis, paddle and pickleball courts.

Villa Madison is an 11,770-square-foot Mediterranean-inspired estate on a hillside in Hope Ranch, with five bedrooms, room for 10 guests and sweeping views of both the Pacific and the Santa Ynez Mountains.
Villa Madison
Villa Madison is an exceptional hillside residence in the prestigious enclave of Hope Ranch, commanding sweeping ocean and mountain vistas across one of California’s most coveted coastal settings.
Hope Ranch: Santa Barbara's Private Enclave
Hope Ranch is a private residential community on the coast just west of Santa Barbara, between the city and the Goleta Valley. Named for Thomas Hope, who farmed the land in the 1860s, it was developed as an estate neighborhood from 1925. Today it is known for large hillside lots, its own security patrol, a private beach for residents and roughly 27 miles of bridle trails. For anyone weighing Hope Ranch, Santa Barbara against the busier coast, the appeal is simple: space, privacy and the ocean, 10 minutes from town.
Living Spaces
Inside, soaring ceilings, dark wood floors and soft neutral tones give the house a calm, gallery-like scale. Expansive windows and French doors frame the view in nearly every room. The main salon gathers around a statement fireplace and opens straight onto the terrace, while a separate media room and a library offer quieter evenings.

The library caught Ari's eye first. Her most-watched reel from the stay is set in this double-height, wood-paneled room, with a gallery of shelves above and a pool table below. It opens with a question a property specialist would naturally ask: "What makes properties keepers of history?"

"What I love about luxury escapes are the architectural surprises," Ari says in the reel. She says the mahogany gives the room "that old world vibe," the feel of aristocratic European interiors.
The real surprise was on the shelves. Tucked inside the books, Ari explains, are notes written to the home's original owner, Robert Erburu, by colleagues and friends. Erburu ran Times Mirror, the parent company of the Los Angeles Times, through the 1980s and 90s. For a property specialist, it is the detail that turns a beautiful room into a story.
The Kitchen And Dining
The chef's kitchen features custom cabinetry, double ovens, oversized islands and polished stone surfaces. It is laid out for a private chef to create while guests gather. Nearby, a formal dining room wrapped in curved windows turns dinner into an occasion and informal breakfast seating keeps mornings easy.

The Suites
Four suites are in the main villa and a fifth in a private guest house, each with its own bath and dressed in fine linens with bespoke finishes. The primary suite, the only bedroom on the main level, stands apart. Vaulted ceilings, a king-sized bed, private views and a spa-style bath with dual vanities open straight onto a private hot tub with an ocean view.

Ari gave the primary suite a reel of its own, calling it a principal bedroom "fit for a Queen." It is where she started her Santa Barbara mornings with balcony doors opened onto the Pacific and the gardens, "a little jaunt" through the suite's own sitting room, then "a little spa sesh" in the outdoor hot tub.
Wellness And Leisure
Villa Madison, part of the LVH Tennis collection, is as much like a private club as it is a residence. A home gym, massage area and a temperature-controlled wine cellar are inside. Outside are a heated pool, a full tennis court, broad lawns edged by mature trees, an outdoor kitchen, a fire pit and shaded terraces for long lunches.

Ari put the court to use on Sunday morning, with two hours of private lessons.

Simply relax with the best wellness retreats.

The Outcome of the Stay
Ari Reid has walked through more exceptional homes than most people will ever see listed. She assesses them on light, layout, finish and location, and on whether life inside matches the photographs. At Villa Madison, the library gave her the history. In her words, it was "absolutely incredible to be able to go back in time through a home." But as she packed to leave, Ari put the stay in different terms.
"It's not just the house that has made this experience truly incredible," she said. "It's the people and the experiences behind it." The riding, yoga at the house, massages and dinner reservations all came together, and for Ari, "it just felt so effortless."
LVH arranged every detail, from massages to tennis lessons. For those planning their own stays in Hope Ranch, LVH will create bespoke experiences and itineraries for them and their families.
