On Thursday, May 23, 2024, the amfAR Gala Cannes 2024 will mark its 30th Anniversary with an evening of unparalleled glamour and purpose at the prestigious Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc. This year, the gala is honored to have the illustrious Demi Moore as its host, ensuring an evening filled with sophistication and star power. Adding to the exclusivity and excitement of the night, the legendary Cher has been announced to deliver a special musical performance, promising attendees an unforgettable experience.Set against the cinematic backdrop of the Cannes Film Festival, the amfAR Gala Cannes 2024 encapsulates the essence of luxury with a cause, blending the allure of celebrity with the gravitas of charitable dedication. The 30th Anniversary of the gala commemorates three decades of remarkable achievements in HIV/AIDS research and reinforces the collective commitment to a future free from the disease.

AmFAR's beginnings

Dame Elizabeth Taylor. Her name resonates globally, transcending her remarkable achievements as an actor to embody the essence of a humanitarian and philanthropist par excellence. Following the tragic loss of her close friend, Rock Hudson, to AIDS, she embarked on an impassioned and dedicated crusade against the disease, marking a pivotal chapter in her legacy of advocacy.

“I kept seeing all these news reports on this new disease and kept asking myself why no one was doing anything. And then I realized that I was just like them. I wasn’t doing anything to help,” she said of HIV/AIDS.

So, in 1985, Elizabeth joined with Dr. Mathilde Krim and a small group of physicians and scientists, forming the non-profit American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR). As amfAR’s Founding National Chairperson, she became the new organization’s principal spokesperson and titular head. For many, it was Elizabeth Taylor who brought the issue of HIV/AIDS into the mainstream. She said, “I have dedicated my efforts, above all, to the thousands of men, women, and children throughout the world who have died of AIDS or are currently fighting for their lives.” For the rest of her life, Elizabeth Taylor continued the fight for a cure for this heinous disease, which has claimed the lives of so many.

AmFAR today

Since 1985, amfAR has invested nearly $617 million in its programs and has awarded more than 3,500 grants to research teams worldwide to find a cure for HIV/AIDS. From 2015 to 2020, the foundation invested nearly $53 million in 109 cure-focused research projects in 15 countries. Grants and fellowships support teams of scientists pursuing innovative strategies, including cell and gene therapy, shock and kill, and post-treatment control. 

Raising much-needed funds

Since the inaugural amfAR Gala Cannes in 1993 at the Moulin de Mougins, hosted by amfAR's late founding international chairman Elizabeth Taylor, the event has evolved into one of the festival's most sought-after tickets. It has successfully raised $264 million for amfAR’s critical HIV/AIDS research initiatives that have brought the world within reach of a cure for HIV.
