Towning Around in the Hamptons

April 27, 2023

The loveliest towns in the Hamptons

The Hamptons may be referred to as a single entity, but each quaint hamlet features a unique local culture, atmosphere, and particular amenities. A summer residence hideaway for America's most elite for more than a century, you will find everything from stately manors to small whimsical communities. All along Long Island's southern fork, from Sag Harbor to Water Mill and Bridgehampton, there are many things for you to take in and to do for a truly wonderful vacation away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

We have highlighted some itinerary-worthy areas for you and what they have to offer in providing you with treasured memories. A Hamptons’ holiday 2024 might certainly be in the cards.

Southampton is the first place you’ll see upon getting to the area. It's the region's more sedate and posh town. This oceanfront community is graced with grand mansions and spectacular estates. Sag Harbor was shaped by American aristocracy early in the 20th century. Today, the vibe is prosperous, fun and free-flowing. Also, the village’s seven miles of oceanfront includes 10 different waterfront hotspots from which to choose. Take a walk along Jobs Lane and Main Street, where most shops are located, and you’ll come across the usual suspects: Vineyard Vines, a stunning Club Monaco flagship, J. Crew, Ralph Lauren, and Pottery Barn, to name a few.

For lovers of everything equestrian, Bridgehampton is a celebration of life’s finer attributes. It is brimming with al fresco dining places on tree-lined avenues. However, Bridgehampton is best known for its world-class riding events such as the Hamptons Classic and matches at the Bridgehampton Polo Club.

Sagaponack is the land of luxury in the Hamptons. Originally just a small slice of oceanfront land between Southampton and East Hampton, Sagaponack is home to the elite who live in stately manors and iconic contemporary homes along the ocean. In fact, Sagaponack is regularly ranked as one of the most expensive zip codes in the United States.

Sag Harbor

Sag Harbor is the cultural mecca for writers, intellectuals, and artists. Art galleries, an independent movie theater with an art deco front and an impressive variety of eateries can be found on its Main Street. Expect beautiful beaches with breathtaking sunsets. Sag Harbor is devoid of pretense, yet is still polished and chic. There are many plein air or waterfront restaurants.

Water Mill

Water Mill is a hamlet that has become somewhat of an art hub over the last few years. It's not short on terrific restaurants and makes the ideal family getaway. Flying Point Beach is the main beach, but there’s also The Cut where Mecox Bay cuts through to the ocean so the tides rise and fall and the water flows in and out of the bay. Tidal pools make The Cut a favorite destination for beachgoers with toddlers who can safely play in the pools. One of the most impressive Hamptons’ luxury villas is located in Water Mill. Villa Zarina is a breathtaking Hamptons’ estate brimming with grandeur. You’re close to everything – beaches, woodlands and golf in Sag Harbor. Seven luxuriously appointed bedrooms provide room for up to 14 guests. On the five secluded, wooded acres this home sits on, you will have a heated outdoor pool, waterfalls, wine cellar, theater and library. This exemplary Hamptons' mansion also boasts a spa area, steam, massage, and games rooms.

This is the land of bare feet, boards and bikes! Montauk is replete with ocean-centric vitality. The laid back atmosphere is perfect for those who love water sports. Keep in mind, too, that the dining and nightlife scenes have grown to storied status here in recent years. Think chill days and sweltering nights!

East Hampton

Sophisticated living along the ocean is what East Hampton Village is all about. It is the ultimate upscale seaside resort. The postcard pretty village is a favorite for artists, writers, and other creatives. Premier shopping and dining beckon visitors as do some of the most exclusive beaches in the country such as Georgica, Main, Wiborg, and Egypt Lane Beach. Gucci now also has a boutique on the main drag.

This rustic and refined seaside community is a marriage of easy living and an alluring elegance. The hamlet is just about 6.5 square miles and is home to a sweet Main street, tranquil beaches such as Indian Wells beach, miles of rolling dunes and solitude.
