Smashes of the Titans: US Open vs Wimbledon

June 01, 2022

If watching the top seeds in tennis battling it out in two of the most well-known and well-respected tennis championships in the world sounds like Nirvana to you, you may want to take time out of your busy schedule to head to both the US Open in New York and Wimbledon in London, this year.

The US Open is scheduled for June 16-19, while Wimbledon takes place from June 27 to July 10, which gives you ample time to attend both these amazing tournaments. Or, if time is a constraint, you might opt to choose just one.

Russian Players Barred from Wimbledon

Don’t plan on seeing any players from Russia at Wimbledon this year.

“We recognize that this is hard on the individuals affected, and it is with sadness that they will suffer for the actions of the leaders of the Russian regime,” said Ian Hewitt, chairman of the All England Club. “"We have very carefully considered the alternative measures that might be taken within the UK Government guidance but, given the high profile environment of The Championships, the importance of not allowing sport to be used to promote the Russian regime and our broader concerns for public and player (including family) safety, we do not believe it is viable to proceed on any other basis at The Championships.”

What this means is that Daniil Medvedev, seeded second to Novak Djokovic, will not be playing at Wimbledon, nor will second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus. That also ousted fifth-seeded Andrey Rublev of Russia.

US Open Yet to Make Decision on Russian Players

Organizers of the 2022 US Open tennis tournament have so far made no corresponding statements regarding participation of Russian tennis players in the Grand Slam tournament. An announcement is expected soon.
